This course is designed as an introduction to indigenous gardening and environmental practices using Indigenous Plants.It includes elements of permaculture practices, interconnection with indigenous culture and environmental and sustainable practices.

The course has a focus on practical activities which engage the learner, including interaction with Selby Community Houses own indigenous garden and the local Minak reserve, home to remnant forest. Presentations will be provided by a range of experts in their field. A range of excursions are offered including visits to the South Dandenong Ranges Indigenous Nursery, Cranbourne Botanical Gardens, Aboriginal Heritage Walk – Royal Botanic Gardens (and subject to time – Karwarra in Kalorama and Milarri Garden Trail).

The course aims to provide knowledge from a range of people, who will share their ideas and perspectives and how they have implemented indigenous plants into their gardens.

Week 4 –  Tuesday  – 06 June –       Guest Speaker – Indigenous plants and their relationship to permaculture in gardening
Week 5 –  Wednesday –  14 June – Visit to Southern Dandenong Ranges Indigenous Nursery
Week 6 –   Tuesday –  20 June –      Visit to Royal Botanic Gardens – Melbourne and Milarri Garden Trail
The cost of the course includes entry into the Aboriginal Heritage Walk at the Royal Botanical Garden and entry to Cranbourne Botanic Garden. $50 full fee.  $25 Concession. *The course is government funded, available to Australian citizens and residents.

We have limited places to 12.  (If you miss out this term, we will be running the course again in Term 3).


Week 1  – Introduction to Indigenous Gardening 

Explore Selby Community House’s own Indigenous Bushfoods Garden, identify the array of local plants and learn the difference between indigenous, endemic and native species.  Identify and study 3 indigenous plants of your choosing.  

Week 2  –  Guest Speaker – The history and development of Indigenous plants within Australia

Delve into the history and gain an understanding of the development of indigenous plants within Australia and the local environment. Consider the options of growing your own indigenous plants. Visit Karwarra – Kalorama What is suitable, what soil and climate conditions indigenous plants require. Explore Minak Reserve (located next to the house) to identify environments and the relationship between indigenous plants.  Start working on your plan for your own garden. 

Week 3 –  Visit the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens*

Visit Cranbourne Botanical Gardens and walk some of the 10km of walking tracks to marvel at the 450 indigenous plant species. Learn of their origins and uses.

Week 4 –  Guest Speaker – Permaculture and the relationship with Indigenous, Environmental and Sustainable Practices.  

Explore the notion of environmental and sustainable systems and the symbiotic relationship that have been created between humans, nature and indigenous plants. Explore Minak Reserve (located next to the house) to identify environments and the relationship between indigenous plants.  Apply permaculture principles to your plan.

Week 5 – Visit to the Southern Dandenongs Community Nursery* 

Visit this local indigenous Community Nursery located within Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave Heights. This unique area is home to remnant flora. Talk with the facilitators and learn about what indigenous plants are best to purchase or grow from seed.  Select the plants you will use in your plan.

Week 6  – Visit to the Aboriginal Heritage Walk at the Royal Botanical Garden* (The cost is covered in the course)

Visit the world famous Melbourne Royal Botanical Garden and participate in an Aboriginal Heritage Walk for 1 hour 30 minutes.  Subject to time, visit Milarri Garden Trail

*Transport will be via public transport or via car pooling or your own private vehicle. Transport costs can be reimbursed if required.
